LinkedIn’s Solution to Search Overload

9th December 2010

LinkedIn has launched yet another tool to power your job search, your connections and how you interact with both.

Currently in Beta, LinkedIn Signal is a highly customizable search stream featuring updates and links shared by your network and interests. Think of it as a custom news feed featuring  information related to your professional life. Essentially, Twitter without (most) of the personal posts.

The tool allows you to create a search criteria based on several filters:

  • My Network
  • Industry
  • Company
  • Time Posted
  • Region
  • School
  • Tags

There is also a Trending Links sidebar to share popular articles or websites among your network.

As we all continue to add new Twitter followers, subscribe to newsletters and add to our RSS feeds, keeping up on the latest industry news is growing more and more difficult each day. LinkedIn continues to make improvements to not only how we connect with people, but also how we access this vital information – a feature that’s sure to draw users to the site on a regular basis.

Last week, my co-workers Kathlene Hestir and Stacy Cohen and I hosted a lunch and learn on QR codes; how to use them, what’s cool and the business applications we have seen.

If you missed the presentation, check it out below. If you are interested in attending an Engauge Lunch and Learn hosted by the Digital Innovation Group, send me an email at kdennihy [@] gmail.com

How to download your Facebook history

6th December 2010

Ever wondered what would happen if Facebook disappeared? All of those tagged photos from college, the wall posts from your best friend, even the events you attended 5 years ago, gone. Facebook has become a digital copy of our lives, and let’s be honest, we would all be pretty upset if it suddenly disappeared.

Facebook has proven it’s not going anywhere anytime soon, but just in case you can be sure to have file copies of all of that information by downloading it all. Say you lose your camera or your harddrive is fried…Facebook could come to the rescue.

Simply navigate to: Account > Account Setting > and between “Account Security” and “Deactivate Account” you will find “Download your information.”

Your file will include the following information:

  • Your profile information (e.g., your contact information, interests, groups)
  • Wall posts and content that you and your friends have posted to your profile
  • Photos and videos that you have uploaded to your account
  • Your friend list
  • Notes you have created
  • Events to which you have RSVP’d
  • Your sent and received messages
  • Any comments that you and your friends have made on your Wall posts, photos, and other profile content

Thanks to my friend Judy Yi for pointing out this tip on Twitter.
