Friday Favorites: Edition Six

8th January 2016

We made it to the first REAL Friday of 2016 (January 1st, as you were spent on the couch, you don’t count). While the weather may have reverted back to its ugly face, this week was filled with warm, sunny surprises. In the figurative sense at least.

On holiday lights

Fun fact: The Twelve Days of Christmas begins on Christmas day, meaning I insisted we soak up the holiday through Wednesday. January 6th, known as Three Kings Day or The Epiphany, celebrates the day the three wise men reached Mary, Joseph and Jesus. The meaning behind this part of the season is something I fall more in love with every year and gives us an equally opportunistic chance to listen to N’Sync and pause to consider the joy that comes with the kings’ journey.

Tuesday night we made it out to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens for the holiday light exhibit and it did not disappoint. Bonus points: it wasn’t crowded, it was actually cold enough for s’mores and the Christmas music was still blaring. My holiday heart can rest happy until Advent 2016.

This week I had two opportunities to get back in touch with my UGA roots. First, I enrolled in Grady’s student mentorship program late last fall and met with my mentee for the first time this week. If only she could take me to class on Monday, it would have been perfect. Next up, UGA’s Give a Dog a Bone campaign kicked off this week, with my stack of cards and envelopes arriving Thursday. The campaign asks alumni to write cards of congratulations to incoming freshman (class of 2020) and is still seeking volunteers if you’re interested. It’s also a fun excuse for me to practice envelope calligraphy.

I put my new Peal Ex Powdered Pigments from Paper Ink and Arts to work this week after receiving a set from P for Christmas. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to write in plain, black sumi ink again. So far, the rose gold is just to-die for. Since the inks are powder based, I can mix as much as desired for each sitting. I can’t wait to experiment with mixing a little into some of my other colored inks as well.

If you’re new to Friday Favorites, this is a series where I catalogue random happenings from Monday to Friday that bring joy to what can feel like the boring part of the week. Weekends shouldn’t get all of the life credit you guys. You can catch other posts from the series here.

Friday Favorites: Edition Five

11th December 2015

TGIF and thank goodness I’ve finally gotten my act together enough to capture a Friday favorite. While the past few weeks have been a bit more turbulent than expected, today marks two weeks until Christmas, so let’s do this.

On Crutches

As in, no need for ’em here. P had ACL surgery last Friday and I was certainly more nervous than he was about it. Thankfully, the replacement went great and he’s on the road to recovery. He’s already walking in a brace, sans crutches and off of any sort of painkiller. Whoo!

On the Christmas Countdown

The stockings are hung, the house is half way lit and I’ve made a habit of committing myself to whatever ABC Family is playing every evening. In case you’re looking for workday motivation, this Spotify playlist is hands down the best one out there. I could get used to this.

On Anniversaries

Since we were off in Ecuador last month, we celebrated our thirteen month/engagement anniversary on Tuesday with dinner brought to us by wedding gift cards and cake brought to us by Publix…thirteen months ago.

On TBT

The last few weeks have been rough for the Kelly/Dennihy/White clan, but this week’s exhaustion was made worth it after spending a late night across the country with cousins over wine, bakery cookies, cheesecake and pasta. Oh and these outfits. If there’s ever a sure fire way to see how loved someone was, it’s to pull all of the people around them into one giant hug. Or spoonful of cinnamon.

Friday Favorites: Edition Four

30th October 2015

Congratulations, not only did we make it to Friday, but we also made it to Halloween eve. I’ll be celebrating with the two bags of candy corn I have yet to eat (after already making it through three ?). Beyond mini candy bars, ghosts and ghouls, there was plenty to stop and be thankful for this week.

On baby animals

Uber ran a promo this week to request a basket of kittens instead of a car. Thanks to quite a bit of dedication, the Dragon Army team lucked out and four furry friends arrived at our office for a play date this week. Pure bliss. The promotion cost $30, with proceeds going to the Atlanta Humane Society. The kittens are also all up for adoption starting today, for $10 each. Happy take home a cat day.

On the never ending Hocus Pocus

I hosted a Hocus Pocus party at my house earlier this week, because we all need another excuse to break out that DVD. Kate made these bloody cocktails, which really tasted like we belonged on a beach somewhere. A beachy drink + October = can we do this every night?

On partying with the past

The Atlanta History Center hosted this month’s Party with the Past at Oglethorpe University. If you’ve never been, this event series is one of my favorites. Each month, they choose a new historic destination around town and while the beer is not free, the history is, so it more than makes up for itself in the long run. For this event, we heard about the Crypt of Civilization, a time capsule sealed in 1940 and scheduled to open in 8113 AD. You read that right, we have roughly 6,000 years to go.

On the YouTube of the future

I had the pleasure of moderating a panel at this year’s Mobility Live conference on the future of mobile video. Speakers from CNN, Twitter, Akamai and NewsOn shared more than a few interesting discussion points, proving to us all that yes, someone is responsible for keeping the internet going and no, it isn’t run by little hamsters on wheels.

On what’s ahead for the weekend.

Halloween, duh. Can we have a mulligan on October? Let’s make it happen all over again.
